What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys come with unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, which is not the case with older keys. This keeps thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

These keys are typically purchased from a dealership or cloned by a locksmith. The procedure for programming the key varies by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position without starting the engine, then removing it after a specific time frame.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, transponders transmit an encoded signal that contains an eight-digit number code whenever it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal, called a SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit specific messages to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are essential to ensure safe flying.

Each aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft on a busy radar screen. Transponders have several different modes that vary in how they respond to questions. Mode A transmits only the code, whereas mode C also includes altitude information. Mode S transponders provide more detailed information including call signs and location, which can be useful in airspace that is congested.

A common sight is a small beige box under the seat of a pilot in most aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code every time the air traffic control is activated on the aircraft. The transponder can be set to the  ON position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.

Air traffic control can often instruct a pilot "squawk the ident". This is a directive for the pilot to hit the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button causes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens and allows them to identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircraft, although there are certain reserved codes that restrict the use of a particular code in areas of high traffic or for emergencies. The codes are arranged through statistical analysis to minimize the chance that two aircrafts with identical SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at the same time.

A transponder key is an individual chip that holds the ID code. If the security light on a vehicle appears, it indicates that the ID code of the key does not match the code that is stored in the computer. When this occurs, the vehicle's immobilizer will be turned off and the car won't start unless another key is used. PIN Codes

A PIN code consists of a set of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to a device or service. For instance, a smart phone, for example, has PIN codes that the user has to enter each time they use the device. PIN codes are also commonly used to safeguard ATM or transactions at POS,[1] secure access control (doors, computers, cars),[2] computer systems,[3] and internet transactions.

Although a longer PIN may appear to be more secure than a smaller one, it is possible to hack or guess the 4-digit PIN. To ensure greater security it is recommended that PINs be at least 6 digits long, and include both letters and numbers. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs for key programmers from aftermarket to ensure that they are not misused by unauthorised people to collect data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers can be used to identify cars and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on earth and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a combination numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your vehicle or truck.

Each VIN number contains a different piece of information. The first digit is the kind of car it is, such a passenger vehicle, pickup truck, or SUV. The second digit identifies the manufacturer. The first digit is given an 8 and each subsequent digit increases in value by one, until the seventh digit reaches nine, which is then two. Then, the whole VIN is translated back into its original form by multiplying each digit's weight by 11. If the result is same as the check digit then the VIN is valid.

Data Transfer
